Individual Counselling
What Is Individual Counselling?
Individual counselling is a space just for you. It’s a chance to talk openly with someone who isn’t a friend or family member—someone who can be objective and is trained to actively listen, ask thoughtful questions, and help you make sense of what’s going on inside.
Individual counselling has nothing to do with fixing you (because you’re not broken). Individual counselling is a space to understand yourself better, find new ways to cope, and feel more in control of your life.
Why Do People Go To Individaul Counselling?
There are many reasons a person may seek individual counselling. Sometimes there is no clear stressor or presenting concern. Sometimes people will seek individual counselling because something just feels off, and they’re not sure why. Some other common reasons may include:
Feeling overwhelmed or stressed all the time
Finding it difficult to regulate emotions
Struggling with anxiety, sadness, or low self-esteem
Navigating a breakup, loss, or major life transition
Struggling with substance use, addiction or experiencing a lack of healthy coping strategies
Having trouble in relationships which may include difficulty setting/maintaining boundaries
A desire to understand past experiences, including traumas and how they may be affecting you
Needing a space to talk without judgment
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit. You can come as you are—even if all you know is “I’m not feeling like myself lately.”
What Happens in a Session?
Sessions include a mix of talking, reflecting, and sometimes gently challenging thoughts or patterns that aren’t serving you. A good therapist won’t tell you what to do— they will help you explore what’s going on, how you’re coping, and what you might want to change.
You set the pace. You bring the topics. Your therapist brings support, perspective, and tools to help you move forward.
Examples of how your therapist may help in session would include:
Supporting you in making sense of your thoughts and feelings
Challenging negative thought patterns
Identifying your core values
Identifying patterns across interpersonal dynamics
Breaking down patterns which no longer serve you
Helping you develop new coping strategies
Reprocessing trauma using EMDR or Accelerated resolution therapy
Helping you build confidence and self-awareness
Does It Work?
It can. Counselling isn’t a magic fix—You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t have to go through things on your own. Counselling is a way to honor what you’ve been through—and begin moving forward with support, compassion, and care.
